Kalkalator Review - The Intelligent Kalkwasser Reactor by Marine Spectra | SR Unfiltered
Kalkwasser has been around forever for a reason. It is cheap, effective, simple in principle, and it can give us one of the biggest side benefits in reefing, which is a meaningful pH boost. Plenty of great tanks have run on kalkwasser alone or used it as part of a larger supplementation strategy.
But kalkwasser also has a few practical barriers. Traditional setups can take up space. Reactors can be inconsistent. Dosing mistakes can be ugly. And most of us are not measuring whether the solution is actually staying at full strength over time.

That is why the Kalkalator from Marine Spectra is interesting. It combines three separate pieces of gear into one unit:
A kalkwasser stirrer/reactor
A built in dosing pump
A conductivity meter to monitor solution strength
At a listed price of $525, it is trying to be more than just another kalk reactor. The pitch is that it is cheaper than buying all of those parts separately, easier to use, more compact, and smarter about maintaining a consistent kalkwasser dose.
That is a strong promise. The real question is whether it actually delivers.
Why kalkwasser still matters
Before getting into the unit itself, it helps to understand why kalkwasser remains so attractive.
When used properly, kalkwasser can:
Supplement calcium and alkalinity
Raise pH
Do it at a relatively low cost
Keep the dosing approach fairly straightforward
Compared to some alternatives, it has a lot going for it. Many reefers prefer it over soda ash because of the pH benefit. It also avoids the more aggressive handling concerns that come with sodium hydroxide based options.
For many tanks, especially those that respond well to better pH, kalkwasser can be an excellent tool.
Kalk reactor versus reservoir method
To judge something like the Kalkalator fairly, we need to compare it to the two common ways people use kalkwasser.
The reservoir method
This has long been a favorite approach. We take a container of fresh water, add kalkwasser powder, mix it, and let it settle with a loosely fitted lid. As long as we add a little more kalk than the water can dissolve, the solution remains fully saturated.
Then a dosing pump pulls the clear kalkwasser and delivers it to the tank.
The advantages are pretty clear:
It is simple
It is reliable
It usually stays near maximum saturation
The failure points are relatively few
The downside is space. We usually need:
One container for kalkwasser dosing
A separate container for auto top off water
That two bin setup is not realistic for everyone.
The kalk stirrer or reactor method
A kalk reactor works differently. Fresh water is pulled in from a nearby source, mixed with kalk slurry inside the reactor, and then the clear, saturated limewater exits to the tank.
In theory, that sounds elegant. In practice, not every reactor keeps the solution as consistent as we would like. Some work well. Some do not. And most of them do not actually verify whether the solution is at full potency.
That is where the Kalkalator tries to separate itself. It is designed to pull from the same RO/DI reservoir already used for auto top off. If it works as advertised, we only need one water container serving both purposes.
For people who do not have room for separate kalk and ATO bins, that could be a genuine game changer.
What the Kalkalator claims to do
Marine Spectra positions this as an intelligent kalkwasser reactor with several standout features:
Touchscreen and app control
Built in dosing pump
Quiet stepper motor
Conductivity based saturation monitoring with alerts
Continuous dosing or scheduled dosing windows
API connectivity for possible controller integration
