SR150 Guide To Reefing

The SR150 is a 150-episode build series centered on an Innovative Marine 150 EXT. The name is simple: 150 gallons, 150 episodes, and one deliberate mission. We are going to cover why we make the choices we make, what we use, and how we put it all together.

Great reef tanks do not begin with a glass box, a lighting package, or a pile of gear. They begin with a simple question: what do we actually want to keep? That is the first pillar behind the SR-150. Before choosing a tank, planning an aquascape, or buying a single pump, we need to start with the animals that get us excited.

When we talk about turbocharging a reef tank, we are not talking about throwing more gear at it, cranking every setting to the maximum, or riding the razor’s edge. We are talking about applying evidence based biology so corals can put more energy into photosynthesis, tissue development, skeletal growth, and color instead of constantly adapting to changing conditions.

Our goal with the SR150 is straightforward: take a sterile tank, potentially filled with sterile rock and sand, and turn it into a living marine habitat where the microorganisms are balanced before the slimes and uglies get their opportunity.

UV sterilizers are one of the most debated pieces of equipment in reefing. Some reefers consider them essential insurance against parasites. Others see them as expensive, oversized gear that takes up space, adds maintenance, and solves a problem they have never had.

For the SR150, our job is to cut apart the factory return plumbing, integrate a UV sterilizer, choose a return pump, and establish a flow rate we can actually measure and maintain. We also want to make future maintenance easy, because a clever plumbing layout is not much of a win if changing a UV bulb becomes an afternoon project.
