AquaForest Component 1+, 2+, 3+. Who Is This For?
SR Unfiltered Review
We explored AquaForest Component 1+, 2+, 3+ to figure out where it fits in the reefing toolbox.
Short version: It is not our top pick for intermediate or advanced systems that need concentrated solutions or active pH control.
It is a convenient, ready-to-use liquid balling-style system that makes life easy for new reefers and hobbyists dosing by hand.

Overview:
AquaForest 1+, 2+, 3+ is a ready-to-use, three-part liquid additive system built around the classical balling approach but shipped pre-dissolved in 5 L jugs. It mixes alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium with some additional elements like potassium, so it looks like a simple one-stop set for reefers who want liquid balling without handling powders. We tested packaging, chemistry, mixing clarity, dosing ease, and how the product stacks up when compared with more concentrated alternatives.
Key specifications at a glance
Format: Liquid, pre-dissolved in 5 L containers
Alkalinity concentration: ~2,500 DKH per liter
pH effect: pH neutral (does not raise pH like soda ash or hydroxide solutions)
Includes: Alkalinity (bicarbonate), calcium, magnesium, potassium, minor and trace elements in the overall system
Packing: Robust locking ring cap that resists leaking and crusting
Retail price observed: ~$55.99 per 5 L jug (varies by retailer)
Standardized Cost
At first glance, the low retail sticker seems attractive, but the real cost story is concentration. AquaForest’s alkalinity solution is relatively dilute at approximately 2,500 DKH per liter. Other products on the market reach concentrations of 10,000 DKH per liter. That means you may need four times the volume of AquaForest 1+2+3+ to deliver the same alkalinity boost as a higher-concentration product. In practical terms, the lower concentration raises the standardized concentration cost.
We have found that comparing prices across brands is confusing because concentration and format vary wildly. Therefore, we standardized the cost to a common chemical metric: 10,000 DKH per liter. The SR standardized concentration cost (SR-SCC) for AquaForest Component 123+ is about $55.99 based on a 5-liter set. To date, the SR-SCC range we have found across all products is roughly $7 to $55.99 per the same standardized unit, so this represents the highest so far.
B-Ionic Concentration: 2.500 dkh/L
B-Ionic Cost: $69.99(5 Liter set)
10,000 DKH/L Standard: $55.99
*SR has developed a standardized cost for two part because You’re not paying for water, you’re paying for the salts dissolved in it. The SR Standardized Concentration Cost (SR-SCC) levels the playing field by calculating cost based on a standardized concentration of 10,000 dKH per liter. In short, SR-SCC shows how much of any reviewed additive is required to reach that same 10,000 dKH per-liter equivalent, making it easier to evaluate what you are really getting for your money.
Chemistry and approach
This is a bicarbonate-based, pH-neutral product line. That makes it friendly for manual dosing because it does not spike pH the way soda ash or hydroxide solutions can. The line includes magnesium, potassium, minor and trace elements. All factoring for coral uptake and dilution.
The original balling method was partially designed to address sodium and chloride buildup while delivering the major ions corals need. AquaForest continues that concept in a convenient liquid format rather than dry.
"If you had found this as your first reefing solution, it would be a very reasonable way to start — easy to use and hard to overdose."
The pH-neutral design has pros and cons. For beginners or people dosing manually, not changing pH is a safety feature. For intermediate and advanced reefers who are dealing with CO2-compromised houses or tightly sealed homes, a pH-raising approach (soda ash or hydroxide) can be beneficial. We advise choosing the chemistry that matches your household CO2 or tank pH dynamics and whether you dose by hand or use automation.
Ease of use and packaging
This is the product’s strongest point. The liquid format removes the mixing step and the common user errors that come with dissolving powders. Packaging deserves a special mention: AquaForest uses a robust locking ring and well-sealed caps that survive shipping without leaking or forming crust on the outside. For anyone who has dealt with sticky, crusted jugs, this is a significant quality-of-life improvement.
Daily dosing is straightforward because the components are in equal parts. For practical hand dosing we recommend transferring the solution to a smaller pour-friendly container or dosing bottle to avoid awkward pouring from a large 5 L jug.
Subjective purity and observations
We performed basic white bucket tests. Magnesium and alkalinity mixes stayed clear, but the calcium component had a brown tint and showed thin strand-like wisps. Those wisps look like possible microbial or organic material. While that does not automatically mean a product is inappropriate, it is worth noting — if you prefer crystal-clear additives, there are clearer options available.
Tools and support
AquaForest provides an online calculator on their site, and their dosing numbers are present in some third-party calculators. That makes it easier to adopt the line without having to reverse-engineer concentrations.
Pros and cons
Pros
Ready-to-use liquid: No mixing mistakes, ideal for beginners.
pH neutral: Safer for hand dosing and low risk of pH spikes or precipitation when poured quickly.
Good packaging: Robust seals and locking rings minimize shipping leaks and crust buildup.
Complete components: Includes magnesium and potassium in the system and offers separate bottles for targeted dosing.
Calculator available: Online tools help plan dosing.
Cons
Low concentration: ~2500 dKH per liter means you need large volumes to supply the same carbonate as more concentrated products, raising long-term cost. Also means more frequent refills.
Not ideal for low pH tanks: If you need pH-raising supplements (soda ash or hydroxide) or high concentrations for automated dosing, this might not be optimal.
Subjective purity issues: Brown tint and thin strands in the calcium jug may bother users who expect completely clear additives.
Alternatives and next steps.
AquaForest also offers other formats — a white version, a true concentrate, and a calcium formate 3in1 product. If this system’s convenience appeals, but you want a different balance of concentration and chemical behavior, check those variants.
Final recommendation
AquaForest Component 1+, 2+, 3+ is a solid, user-friendly, balling-style liquid system that excels at lowering the barrier to entry. We recommend it primarily for new reefers and anyone who wants a safe, easy-to-dose alkalinity and calcium regimen without mixing powders.
For intermediate and advanced reef systems that demand concentrated dosing, active pH management, or the lowest long-term cost per dKH added, we believe there are better options that cost a lot less.
